Is it almost time for your move this summer? A few weeks can pass by quickly, and you want to make sure you’re not caught off guard by the time moving day comes around. Beat procrastination and set aside time this week to call your moving company for some quality moving boxes and packing materials.

All My Sons Moving & Storage will deliver a variety of moving boxes and packing supplies to your door at no charge, but check with your moving company to make sure the service is offered. You will only pay for what you use, so don’t worry if you have extra moving boxes lying around. There are various types of moving boxes you can request, including dish packs and wardrobe boxes. Dish packs come equipped with separated cubbies for glasses and mugs. Wardrobe boxes are tall and come with a cardboard rod to hang your clothing on. Of course, I also have boxes of all sizes for anything from bedding to books.

If you’re looking to collect some used moving boxes, beware that a used box is structurally weaker than a new one. Ask your moving and storage company for gently used boxes, or stick with new ones. The longer your belongings will be in moving boxes, the sturdier the box should be. Naturally, my coworkers and I are here if you have any questions before, during and after moving day.

When things get busy and time is scarce, it is easy to get overwhelmed, especially when it comes to your move to Dallas. The smallest hiccup in your plans can be enough to set you on edge and slow your progress. I know moving is stressful, and you want to get it over with as soon as possible. But slow down! During your move, take a few deep breaths and take it slow. Rushing can lead to injuries and costly damages if you mishandle your belongings. Here are a few tips to help keep you focused during a hectic move:

1) Have a Plan – Move heavy items first, when you’re more rested. Move boxes room by room, starting at one end of the house and making your way to the opposite end.
2) It’s Not a Race! – Don’t walk too quickly while carrying heavy items. Also, refrain from trying to lift bulky items without the help of another mover.
3) For best results, call professional movers! There is no substitute for experience.

Summer is getting closer, and so is your summer move! Hopefully your plans are moving along smoothly. It’s a little less than a month from moving day now, so here are some additional tasks to take care of now to ensure a smooth move to Dallas.   Be sure to check out past posts to make sure you’ve covered all of the initial preparations.

1) It’s time to create your furniture floor plan. Make a rough sketch of your new space and decide how you would like your furniture arranged. You can even color-code your furniture by room. Preplanning will make your move easier, and your Dallas movers will make sure each piece is placed as you want it. This way, you won’t have to move your heavy items and rearrange everything after the movers have left.

2) If you live in a multi-unit complex, particularly a high-rise, make preparations for a smooth move out of the community. Some communities can reserve a freight elevator at your request, giving your movers access and much-needed space to safely move your belongings without imposing on other residents. Check to see if loading docks or special parking are available and make a reservation for your moving day. Access to a dock will help your professional movers load your items more efficiently.

Four weeks can go by quickly, so keep checking back for more moving tips as the countdown to moving day continues!

Welcome to the first week of May! Our Dallas movers are continuing to prepare for a busy summer moving season, but that doesn’t mean there’s no time left for celebration. As you join the DFW community in celebrating Cinco de Mayo, reflect on the importance of the holiday.

Cinco de Mayo is a highly-celebrated holiday in Mexico commemorating the Mexican army’s defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The battle is famous as an underdog success story. The French army was notably better-equiped than Mexican forces and had remained undefeated for 50 years. The holiday is celebrated throughout Mexico and the United States with gatherings that include food, music and dancing…and maybe a cerveza or two!

Enjoy the festivities happening around the community and at local Mexican restaurants. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

In this economy, a good employee is a priceless commodity. So when all of those great employees are interrupted by a stressful move of your business, productivity can suffer. If you find yourself facing a corporate relocation in Dallas, it can be an anxious time for business owner and employee alike. You’re preparing for a new environment while business needs to go on as usual.

So what to do? To solve this problem and save your business a lot of headaches, my coworkers and I implement a plan that expedites your move while reducing impact to your employees and your business. How do we do this? All My Sons assigns your company a personal moving consultant the minute you call to request our professional moving and storage services. Your moving consultant, our office staff and a large team of Dallas movers get to work planning your office relocation. We break into teams, with half handing the safe loading of your company’s belongings while the other team transports and safely unloads your belongings. We can set up furniture while protecting the walls and flooring of your new space. As an added bonus (and my favorite feature), most office relocations are performed using plastic, stackable bins instead of cardboard boxes. These bins offer more protection for your belongings while reducing environmental impact.

All My Sons definitely has experience in corporate relocations. We also offer storage for businesses, moving tips and more.

A few weeks ago I laid out some suggestions to begin organizing, planning and executing your move this summer. How are the preparations going? Now that summer is just over a month away, there are a few more things you can do to ensure a smooth move to Dallas.

Have you submitted a Change of Address form to the post office? Visit the USPS website to change your address online, or pick up a hardcopy at your local post office. Be sure to allow a few weeks for the USPS to process the form and update your address. In the mean time, let everyone from family members to service providers know that your address is changing to prevent delays in receiving your mail.

If you have a green thumb, start planning on the transport of your plants. If you want to take your garden with you, pot your ground plants. Remember, most moving companies cannot move your potted plants, so plan to move them yourself or make alternative arrangements. It’s a good idea to pack fragile potters and repot your plants in portable, plastic pots for the move.

Don’t forget you pets! Remember that a move can be as stressful for Fido as it is for your human children. If you have access to your new home at this point, take your dog over to the new area. Even a brief introduction to the backyard will make your pet feel more comfortable with the change.

Getting these simple yet often time-consuming tasks out of the way now will leave you with less to worry about on moving day! For more moving tips, come back soon or visit our moving checklist on the All My Sons website.

Trash those moth balls for good!

Trash those moth balls for good!

A childhood memory recently popped into my head as I was thinking about how moving and storage processes have matured over the years. My family utilized our attic to store our winter clothes during the summer and vice versa. I remember pulling a favorite sweater out of a cardboard moving box, the pungent and medicinal smell of moth balls permeating each piece of clothing in the box. Yuck! It seemed like it took weeks to get the smell out.

While storage is easy and convenient at All My Sons, some of our customers prefer utilizing closet, attic and shed space for their storage needs. New products are now on the market and offer protection for your items, without the stinky moth ball smell. Here are a few tips to help keep your stored goods in great shape.

1) While moving boxes are great to use during your move, avoid using them for storage purposes. Purchase a few large, sturdy plastic bins that seal tightly to keep out air, bugs and dust.
2) Take advantage of vacuum sealable products. These space-saving bags let you use your vacuum cleaner to pull air out of specially-designed, durable storage bags. Your items stay safe and, in the case of linens or clothing, take up less space than traditional storage methods.
3) Choose your storage area wisely. Remember that your attic can reach sweltering temperatures on even a mild day in DFW. Candles, thin plastics and plywood can warp and crack in extreme temperatures.

If professional storage isn’t for you, the Dallas movers of All My Sons want to make your home storage as convenient, safe and easy as possible.

As fast as time flies, your summer move will be here before you know it! Are you ready? Although summer is a couple of months away, now is the time to get your moving plans organized. All My Sons Moving & Storage has valuable resources to help you get started in the form of tools, tips and suggestions. Whether you need a head start on your storage or just a few organizational tips, our Dallas movers are here with four generations of summer moving experience under their belts.

To begin, organize the big picture of your move by asking and answering a few simple questions. Will I hire movers? Will I need storage? When will I move? Although it may seem obvious, picking a moving date is a great place to begin. This will allow you to plan your summer move down to the last detail…and the last hours! And as soon as you know your moving date, share it with your Dallas moving company. Although All My Sons works hard to provide all of our customers with the exact time that is convenient for them, we simply cannot be in four places at once! Scheduling your move with All My Sons as early as possible will hold your moving date and time and allow you to plan your move more efficiently.

Next, evaluate your storage needs. Walk through your home and write down a mental catalog of items you would like to put into secure storage.  Chances are, you’ll be able to estimate how much storage space you will need. Then, call All My Sons to arrange your full-service pick up, where our Dallas movers collect your belongings from your home and bring them to our secure, climate-controlled storage facility.

There are more tips on the way for your summer move. I hope these suggestions get your move off to a great start.

I had no idea what it took to run a successful Dallas moving company— and not only because successful moving companies are few and far between— until I started working for All My Sons Moving & Storage. The lives of moving employees, from the Dallas movers to the staff members and managers, are rough! Between the long hours, working holidays and not to mention all of the heavy-lifting, being a part of a moving company isn’t for everyone.

You have to have a heart for helping people, the patience of a saint and a sense of responsibility to succeed as a Dallas moving company employee. We look for all of these qualities when we carefully interview each Dallas mover and staff member we hire. Professional movers work in stressful environments that require a large amount of physical work, precision and expert knowledge. Freezing or 100 degrees, rain or shine, our Dallas movers brave the elements to bring expert services to our DFW customers. Unlike most of our friends, three-day weekends are our busy times! Holidays are usually spent on the job, which is an example of how All My Sons goes further to serve our customers.

If you hire our Dallas movers or any local movers in the near future, take the time to thank them for their hard work. Moving is a tough job, but someone has to do it! It might as well be the professional movers of All My Sons.
